Express licences only prohibit use of the same release of Domino by more than one server. It doesn't stop you having multi-versioning of Domino within one instance of the operating system as long as you only have one server per Domino code instance.

Thanks, Tony! Having read your article, I looked through Lotus Domino Express license model and everything became much clearer to me. God job!<img alt="Emoticon" src="http://dev.blogsphere.net/blogsphere/bsphere3.nsf/emoticons/DLYH-5MZVLY/$File/smile.gif" />

Were you thinking of us when you wrote this, Tony? We have Sametime in a partitioned Domino server on an iSeries and want to move to Domino 8.5 so we can use DAOS. Luckily our Sametime 8 is on a separate Domino partition so we can just leave that partition at Domino 8.0.2 until an upgrade for Sametime is available.

By the way, I have the CD for SI30432 (JDK 6 32-bit) right here next to me. Can I install it while Domino is still at 8.0.2?

Thanks again for all your help,

Michael

Hello Mr. Frazier,

we also want du update to domino 8.5
but your notes support hasn´t read the documentation too.

we called the ibm support and heard the same as you - no download, cd 5-9 days.

Iam from Austria and the ibm support in our country isn´t so tuff like yours to make it possible that we could download Java 6 for iseries.

So i write to you in hope you have perhapsly the file on your PC and an FTP too, so that ich could ask you with a big "PLEASE" that we could download the file from you.

thanks

Thanks Rob!

Yes, the iSeries does offer the ability to create different LPARs, or logical partitions at the OS level (stretching my iSeries knowledge now). This particular set of customers will not take that approach either (too expensive, hardware resource availability, staff skill set, etc.).

Lots of reasons as to why they have their current implementation. Originally when introducing them to Domino, I attempted to get them to separate Sametime out to a different server/platform, but the low workload, low cost of Express license, higher cost of other servers, and compatibility of Sametime/Domino pretty much sealed the deal for them to keep it all on the iSeries.

Has not been a problem yet, and probably, hopefully, will not be a problem when Sametime 8.5 is released. Just trying to find a way around it today as some of them want to upgrade to Domino 8.5 for DAOS and ID Vault.

Would be nice if the no partition exclusion to the Express license could be waived if the "other" partitioned server was only used for the Sametime Limited Use.

Thanks again!

Hi Tony, good looking blog. Yes I agree it seems weird that you are licenced to install a separate Domino server for Sametime use but not as a separate partition on an existing install. Does iSeries have any kind of virtualisation at the OS level that lets you install a separate Domino version (kind of like vmWare)?
